Yup. I said it. Piss off a few people? Probably. Do I care? Nope.
Question: “why did we spend the energy, sweat, bodies and tears in the 50s and 60s to not be treated differently because of our skin color…then spend the next 20 years lobbying government to give us special considerations because of our skin color?” Give me all the rights of other Americans to not be treated differently…but treat me differently.”
We need to pick a struggle.
Buckle your seatbelts. This is going to be a long one.
What would rip this country apart by the seams in a matter of hours? I’ll tell you. The government appointment of march being “White history month”. The debut of the “Miss White America” pageant. Affirmative action for Latinos, Asians and whites.
I could go on and on.
We can all agree that the country would be reduced to rubble and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be celebrating all the way to the bank. (They only get paid when someone pulls the race card) we were all mourning trayvon, these 2 were breathing a sigh of relief. “Get up Jesse, somebody black got shot, time to go to work!” Dr. King would be appalled and so disappointed in his protege. . Get a real job you two and quit pimping your own race! Sunday being the most segregated day of the week, it’s not surprising these two yahoos are preachers! But I disgress.
I currently live in the Midwest but was born and raised in the south. I’ve been pulled over on a country road in backwoods south carolina by a racist policeman. I’ve been jailed simply because I was in the wrong part of town for my race. I couldn’t eat at the counter in Woolworth ‘ s growing up and it was the 70’s! I’ve been assaulted, falsely jailed and the list goes on.
So I am offended by the blind ignorance of blacks in the Midwest that further segregate the black race by their misguided notions about what honoring black history is. What really gnaws at my gut is that they have the gall to be racist to other races when they haven’t experienced a 1/4th of what I’ve experienced.
Newsflash: you didn’t get passed over for that promotion again because you’re black…..it was simply because you’re always late, leave early, call in sick for no reason and do just enough to get by!
If Martin Luther King jr.’s dream was that his children be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character….
WHY ARE WE TAKING EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THE COLOR OF OUR SKIN AN ISSUE?
BLACK HISTORY MONTH, the way we’ve celebrated it, is not about the “content of our character” it’s about the COLOR OF OUR SKIN! LOOK AT THE NAME!
If we were truly interested in making Dr. King’s dream a reality, it would be called “Character Appreciation Month”…..but no. We couldn’t do that. Because that would require us to do something of extraordinary character and value. We could no longer stand up every February and recite the exploits of people that’s been dead for decades, because that’s all we’ve got.
We talk about Harriet Tubman freeing the slaves because we’re too lazy to actually do something about the global epidemic of sex slave trafficking today. We are always crying about 400 years of our slavery…. Don’t we owe these slaves a hand?
We ignorantly speak proudly of Otis Boykin creating electrical resistors for guided missiles and computers because we would rather watch
“being Mary Jane ”
Rather than spending that time learning how to code, learning the undiscovered marvels of science, math or increasing our mental aptitudes.
We somehow proudly speak of the 300 uses George Washington Carver found for peanut butter…..yet all our 20 year olds can do with it is make a sandwich or bait a mouse trap. Oh wait…we did invent twerking, battle rap and saggy jeans. Sorry.
Charles Bolden, 1st black astronaut….but our youth can’t begin to describe the principles of aeronautics …
Are you getting the point? We as a people need to shut up and sit down because our lack of due diligence and refusal to build anything of value on the accomplishments of these pioneers is disrespectful to their legacies. My personal suggestion? Suspend black history month until we can only acknowledge the life changing and groundbreaking accomplishments of black people from 1980 to present day. Just my opinion.
In closing, the leaders of the civil rights movement had a specific goal in mind based on a collective assumption. That we would be brighter, smarter, more focused and would attain recognition and acclaim based on our accomplishments that would supercede theirs. So that our value could not be based on our skin but our intellect. Sadly…..they were wrong.
The very existence of BET, Miss Black America, Affirmative Action, the rainbow coalition, college admission quotas, tax breaks for employing minorities etc. Etc….proves that we are still so weak-minded, defunct, still enslaved mentally and (let’s face it) corporately undisciplined and lazy that we STILL…..in 2014….need a handout….a hand up…..or (my most hated phrase) a HOOK up from each other (which keeps all of us broke), society and the government.
SELL ( Not cutting edge science technology, Internet companies, billion dollar businesses, newest mobile tech, land development, stocks, investment services)
(Not how to write code for the next multi billion dollar application for Google glass, how to diversify a foreign investment heavy portfolio, how to leverage a business venture for crowdfunding)
TEACH ( not how to be CEOs instead of employees, fathers instead of child support checks, be the policeman instead of the suspect)
VALUE (not honor, integrity, deferred gratification, sacrifice, global responsibility, leaving a legacy)
And perpecuate ( oh you get the picture..)
….the content of Our character isn’t worth judging.
IT’S NOT ALL OF US…..BUT IT’S MORE OF US THAT FIT THIS CHARACTERIZATION THAN THERE ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT.
I AM an entrepreneur, business owner, CEO, father, preacher, volunteer, American…a BLACK man
AND I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE!
Put it on simmer and let it marinate ppl.
